H-Queer Romance: HIGH ART (1998)

The queer romance that starts with H turned out to be HIGH ART (1998), directed by Lisa Cholodenko.

I found the film's soundtrack on vinyl in Lausanne, buried in one of those $1 record bins that stores leave outside. I had never heard of the film, but the naked lesbian couple on the cover made me assume the music would be decent.

I finally got to watch the story of how Syd (Radha Mitchell), an assistant editor at a photography magazine who lives with her boyfriend (Gabriel Mann), ended up with her upstairs neighbor Lucy (Ally Sheedy), a photographer who lives with her German girlfriend (Patricia Clarkson) in an apartment that's always full of drugs and visiting users.

Radha Mitchell stole every scene. Bravo. I also love her female boss (her male boss's boss), portrayed by Anh Duong.

Fun fact: that German girlfriend was one of Fassbinder's favorite actresses and she keeps mourning a career that ended with Fassbinder's death (Fassbinder is the film director whose biopic ENFANT TERRIBLE i watched a few nights ago)

Up next: a boring romance that starts with an I, a biopic that starts with a J, and a comedy that starts with a K
